Newborn Sleep: A Survival Guide for Exhausted Parents

Newborns sleep 14–17 hours a day — just never when you want them to. Their tiny stomachs need feeding every 2–3 hours, so short cycles are biology, not bad habits.

🔹 What is normal
Waking every 2–3 hours, day/night confusion in the first weeks, noisy grunting sleep, and short naps. None of this means something is wrong.

🔹 Safe sleep, always
• On the back, every sleep.
• Firm flat mattress, no pillows, no loose blankets, no toys.
• Same room as parents (own crib) for the first 6 months.
• Room temperature comfortable, not hot.

🔹 Helping day/night confusion
Daytime: light, noise, normal life during feeds. Nighttime: dim lights, quiet voice, boring feeds. Babies learn the difference within a few weeks.

🔹 Survive the marathon
Sleep when the baby sleeps (yes, really — the dishes can wait). Take turns with your partner in shifts. Accept every offer of help.

Around 3–4 months, longer stretches start appearing. This phase is intense, but it is short — you are doing better than you think.
