New parents are handed a tiny human and a list of fears. Relax: daily care is simpler than the internet makes it look.
🔹 Until the cord falls off
Stick to sponge baths: warm room, warm water, soft cloth, one body part uncovered at a time. Keep the cord stump clean and DRY — fold the diaper below it. It darkens and falls off naturally in 1–3 weeks; a few drops of blood at separation are normal.
🔹 The first real bath
Two or three times a week is plenty — more dries the skin. Water around 37°C (test with your elbow), support the head on your forearm, and keep one hand on the baby at every second. Have towel, clean clothes and diaper within reach BEFORE the water. Babies often cry the first times: your calm voice matters more than speed.
🔹 Skin, nails, and small mysteries
Newborn peeling skin needs nothing — it resolves alone. Tiny white face bumps (milia) too. File or cut nails while the baby sleeps, ideally after a bath when they are soft.
🔹 Diaper zone
Change promptly, clean front-to-back, air-dry a moment before closing. A thin barrier cream at the first sign of redness beats treating a full rash.
You will be an expert within two weeks. Until then, slow hands and a singing voice cover almost everything.
