Around the end of parental leave, every family faces the same puzzle: who holds the baby while we work? Each answer trades money, flexibility and heart differently.
🔹 Daycare / nursery
Usually the most affordable professional option, with social play and trained staff. Downsides: fixed hours, waiting lists, and the legendary first-year germs. Visit unannounced, watch how staff talk to crying children, and ask about caregiver-to-baby ratios.
🔹 Nanny at home
The baby stays in their own world, sick days are not a crisis, hours can flex. It is typically the priciest route; nanny-sharing with another family can cut costs by 30–40%. Interview deeply, check references by phone, and do a paid trial week.
🔹 Grandparents and family
The warmest and cheapest — and the most delicate. A gentle conversation about routines, screens, sugar and "our way vs your way" upfront saves years of friction. A small regular gift or payment honors real work.
🔹 One parent at home
Compare lost salary against total childcare cost + commute + convenience spending. Some families discover working barely pays; others find working saves their sanity — both answers are valid.
Run the numbers per YEAR, not per month, and re-decide every year. The right answer at 6 months is often wrong at 3 years.
