Every pregnant woman rehearses this question at 2 a.m.: is this it? Here is how to tell the dress rehearsal from opening night.
🔹 Early hints (could be days away)
The bump "drops" lower, pelvic pressure grows, you may see the mucus plug, and some women get a sudden burst of nesting energy. Interesting — but pack no bags in panic yet.
🔹 False labor (Braxton Hicks)
Irregular tightenings that fade when you change position, walk, or drink water. Felt mostly in front, not getting stronger over hours.
🔹 True labor
• Contractions come at regular, shrinking intervals and each one is stronger.
• Pain wraps from the back around to the front.
• Walking makes them stronger, not weaker.
The classic 5-1-1 rule: contractions every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour — call and go in.
🔹 Go immediately, whatever the pattern
Water breaking (clear or greenish), bright red bleeding, severe constant pain, or reduced baby movement.
🔹 At the hospital too early?
It happens to almost everyone and no midwife will laugh at you. A checked false alarm is infinitely better than an unchecked real one.
Trust your body — it has been preparing for this longer than you have.
